Amador County is highly regarded for producing some of the very best examples of Zinfandel found anywhere in the world. At Renwood, we offer an array of hand-crafted Zinfandels that showcase the unique qualities of some of the world's oldest and most renowned vineyards from the Shenandoah Valley of California. Currently, we produce six proprietary and vineyard designated Zinfandels: "Old Vine," "Grandme?" "Fiddletown," "Grandpe?" "D'Agostini Bros.," and "Jack Rabbit Flat."
We have also pioneered and remain the sole producer of "Amador Ice Zinfandel" - the only zinfandel wine that is produced in the cryo-extraction process. Just after the fruit is harvested at it's highest degree of ripeness, the fruit is cryogenically suspended (frozen) for nearly two months to obtain maximum concentration. Once pressed, the "syrup" goes through an extended fermentation (approximately six months) before it is allowed to age in barrel for one year. The result is a unique delicious dessert wine that is the essence of Zinfandel.
Amador's steep hillsides, exceeding 1,400 feet in elevation, and warm daytime climate, followed by cool evenings, make this wine region an ideal site for the cultivation of classic Italian varietals, such as Barbera, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. The terroir of Amador County is also conducive to the planting of Rhone varietals, including: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Viognier. We use old-world, hand crafted winemaking techniques - including traditional basket press - to produce the best Italian and Rhone-style wines that Amador County has to offer.
